Bring it on!

“Bring it on!!”

That is just what I suspect David would say to Goliath if the “stand off” happened today. Goliath would be saying, “You think you want some of me???” I love the story of David and Goliath. As a kid I read it hundreds of times. The real question for us is do we want to be David or Goliath???

If you are chasing the world and relying on “self,” it would be Goliath. He was huge. I am not sure if he was handsome, but he towered over people and was feared and revered by men. Scripture describes him as a “champion” in 1 Samuel 17:4. David, on the other hand, was a small but handsome young man. A shepherd, but he had a ton of “CONFIDENCE!!!” Goliath had confidence as well. The source of confidence for the two men was very different.

Confidence is a very attractive trait. When someone has confidence, it can be contagious. Breeding confidence in others around you, especially if you are working on a project and one of your team members displays confidence and vigor about the idea or plan. Or your teammate feels ready for the big game and gets you pumped up. Funny, it can be repelling too. If the pendulum swings to “Cockiness” and outward pride, it can almost put you down and make you feel inferior to the other person. Sometimes your confidence can bring out Jealousy in others when you don’t deserve it. For example, David’s oldest brother, Eliab, as shown in 1 Samuel 17:28, “And Eliab’s anger was kindled against David…..” He taunted and jeered at David when he appeared to have confidence.

With Goliath, his confidence was “VERY COCKY”. He was taunting and prideful and enjoyed the “fear” he evoked in others. He was called a champion, so obviously he had previous success, which fed his “PRIDE!” David also had success. 1 Samuel 17:36-37, “Your servant has struck down both lions and bears, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God. And David said, ‘The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine…'”

We can learn so much from David’s confidence and victory. First, he gave credit where credit was due, he turned it back to GOD. Second, he relied on the past and gained confidence in God as his provider as he fought the bear and lion without a “world stage” (no audience). He had tremendous FAITH. FAITH built over time, trusting God and remembering previous steps taken that built his “CONFIDENCE,” a Godly confidence. David even understood he was a WITTNESS FOR CHRIST as he spoke to Saul. 1 Samuel 17:32, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with the Philistine.” It is so funny to me how Saul wanted to clothe David with his armor that was too heavy and too big for David. David refused it and relied on “What God had given him in the past to fight.” David’s “FEARLESS AND UNWAVERING CONFIDENCE” came directly from God and God working in his life. David clearly had paid attention to God in his daily endeavors previously.

What does this teach me/you???? It teaches God is in our daily lives. It is up to us to seek HIM. Allow Him to Strengthen our Spiritual muscles in our daily endeavors for an audience of ONE (God). Building our faith. Giving credit where credit is due. Being mindful that men/women are watching and our witness of faith and confidence is important. WE can never predict when the audience will be a group or maybe even a world stage, but God builds our confidence in our daily lives to prepare us for all that lies ahead, even “Goliaths!”

Confidence that breeds victories comes from God. A worldly confidence comes from ourselves and pride……. How did that work for Goliath ……? Well, he fell, died and got his head cut off. Scripture teaches in Proverbs 16:18, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” WE have a choice here and it is clear. Would you rather be David or Goliath??? For me, I would rather keep my head!:)))))))) I pick David. Turning all credit and glory back to God!!!
