Heroes of Today

If you read the Back 9 blog, you know by now that I am not a big TV watcher. I have become more of a reader in the last 6 years. I can tell you two of the best books I have read are “Lone Survivor” and “Fearless,” both of which are true life accounts of Navy Seals. A movie was just released based upon the book “Lone Survivor.” I encourage everyone to read these books. It has been a blessing to influence some pretty amazing young people to read these books.

Just this week, our daughter’s boyfriend, Mike, who is a senior at UGA and on the men’s golf team, finished “Lone Survivor” and texted me about the book. I immediately called him to discuss the book!! I love to have “book club” with motivated, aspiring young people who I can somehow influence, with God’s help, to read great books about today’s heroes!! Books about people who have courage, a faith in God, and dedicate their lives to noble things. People who are unselfish and then turn around and give personal accounts of what God has done! It is amazing to see how verses like Psalm 32:8, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you,” are alive and active today in the lives of people like these Navy Seals.

Today, I want to continue to encourage you to read, read, read! Guard your heart and eyes with regards to what you allow in!!!! With today’s modern technology you don’t have to be a reader. Most books can be audibly downloaded and you can listen to them instead. In 2014, there are great people who we can all learn from and be encouraged by. People who can inspire us to “make our lives count!” If you find yourself stuck or unmotivated or lost in the next step you need to take in life……get one of these books and read it. Allow yourself to be moved by someone else’s story!!!

God didn’t create us to be mere spectators in life. He created us to make a difference, to be significant and bloom where we are planted! Ephesians 2:10, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” God has good works for us to accomplish. It doesn’t always mean someone will write a book about us. It doesn’t mean we will necessarily influence thousands or millions but as Matthew 5:16 tells us we should, “…let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Giving glory to God is significant!

Of course the Bible is the very best book you could ever read. 2 Timothy 3:16-17, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.”

GOD will equip all of us for every good work. It is just fun and inspiring to read today’s personal accounts of how God is still in the business of equipping men to do good, NO, great works!! READ today and be encouraged!!!
