Lost My Car!

Lost my car!! Yep! It happened 3 days ago. I will never, ever make fun of anyone who I hear can’t find their car in the mall parking lot! Yep, I was forced to hit the hatch button on my remote to find my car. Out in the grey flock of cars it was like my Car raised its hand!!! Praise God for the person whom I saw do that one time. At that time, I thought to myself, “Wow, poor soul! Shouldn’t be at the mall if you can’t remember where you parked your car!” I might add here that this lady, who “lived out loud” with me that day and taught me something I didn’t think I would ever use, was probably in her late 70’s, early 80’s. No joke and here I am in my early, VERY EARLY 50’s. I Believe God was smiling and thinking, “OH, love ya Sherry. Be careful of not only what you say but also pay attention to your thoughts. Sometimes there is the boomerang effect in life…even with your thoughts!”

I was so miffed at myself for not remembering where I had parked!!! I take a lot of comfort and a little teeny bit of pride, NO A LOT (ashamed to admit it), of having a great sense of direction and being able to locate lost things. Boy, Monday was a very HUMBLING DAY!! Thank God I was by myself. So I had a wrestling match in my head over how could I not remember where I had parked. I had no recall of driving up to the mall or where I had parked. What on earth was I doing when I drove into the parking lot? Was I on the phone? Seriously, it bothered me that I couldn’t recall or hit the “history button” on my computer (my mind) and retrace my steps from just a few hours before. I literally was fighting with myself!!

Okay, if you are thinking I am a little weird, I could be, but I don’t think so. If anyone would think that this was weird, I would like to give them an “honest” pill and then ask some questions. Remember the movie “Liar, Liar”? That movie was such a big hit and people laughed so hard because Jim Carey could not tell a lie for 24 hours. The funny thing is not that he couldn’t lie but when people figured it out, they would ask him the kind of questions that normally you would answer with a nice lie or somehow try to protect yourself in the answer you gave!! He couldn’t do either!! It was so funny to see him actually say things we all at times are guilty of thinking but not actually saying.

I don’t remember specifics about the movie but I remember thinking, if I had to take an “honest” pill and always say what I was thinking, then there are times I would be in trouble!!! It states in Mark 7:21-22, “For from within, out of the heart of a man, came evil THOUGHTS, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, covetry, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness.” In 1 John 1:8 it says, “IF we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.” I believe everyone, starting with me, needs to examine our THOUGHT life. I know I go about my day and sometimes at the end of my day I realize I have had a really good day. Helped people, accomplished my checklist but maybe the sin for me, or the “ugly,” was hidden in my thoughts! No one knows but me and God as stated in 1 Corinthians 2:11, “For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person………” I am encouraged by Scripture to search my heart and my thoughts and work at “taking every thought captive”. After all, in James 4:1 it says, “What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war with in you?”

Yep, if you read Scripture and take seriously what it says, there is much I/we can do to control our behavior with God’s help! God wants us to apply Psalm 139:23-24 where David wrote, “Search me, O God, and know my heart, Try me and know my THOUGHTS. And see if there be any grievous way in me and lead me in the way everlasting.”

Maybe the next time you lose your car in the parking lot it will remind you to check and see if you are taking every thought captive. Or maybe the next time you use the remote to raise the hatch on your car, you will smile, thank your car for raising its hand, and ask God to test your thoughts. Seriously, whatever works to remind us to do a thought check is worth it…no matter how silly/weird it may seem to someone else.
