The Best Kind of Fear

The phrase “fear not” is in the Bible 364 times.

As Christ followers, God’s best for us is to not live in fear. Fear is a chain that our enemy loves to cleverly wrap around us. It is an invisible chain, but a heavy one. It can immobilize the strongest man or woman.

How can we defend against this clever tactic of the “prince of this world?”

Simply by recognizing Who God is and How we are to view God.

I often hear God is a God of love, love, love and while that is true, true, true, we don’t hear much at all about “Fear the Lord,” which is found in Scripture repeatedly and is a command.

How can we “Fear Not”? and “Fear the Lord”? I have found that the more I “Fear the Lord,” the less I fear anything else.

The book of Proverbs in the Bible has so many verses that teach us what it means “to fear the Lord.” It says to “fear the Lord” is the beginning of wisdom. I love Proverbs 19:23, “The fear of the Lord leads to LIFE; then one RESTS content untouched by trouble” [emphasis mine]. This kind of “fear” is a reverence and respect for who God is. He is the Alpha and the Omega. He is sovereign and He is HOLY, HOLY, HOLY.

I love how Oswald Chambers puts it, “The remarkable thing about God is that when you fear God, you fear nothing else, whereas if you do not fear God, you fear everything else.”
