How Much Is Enough?

How much is enough?

This is a serious question…..it is a question I have often pondered with regard to money, possessions, friends, accomplishments……and yes, purses (That is personal to me. Just being REAL here!).

With our kids….it was about golf score. What score was low enough/good enough? More times than not, it just wasn’t good enough. There was always the thought, “Wow, I could have shot ……., if I hadn’t had 2, 3 putts, or…” This line of thinking used to really send me over the edge. If they shot a few under and were dissatisfied, I would pinch myself, or grab my leg under the table, but I really wanted to grab them and say, “Really? When are you ever going to be satisfied?”

If you follow golf, you know very few people win all the time. Some play more consistently than others, but overall most golfers have a hard time being satisfied with their scores. The question of how much is enough…..or being consumed by our desires is addressed in scripture in Luke 12:15-31. It is worth sharing all of these verses for these are Jesus’ direct words:

“Then He said to them, ‘Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions. ‘And He told them a parable, saying, ‘The land of a rich man was very productive. And he began reasoning to himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?’ Then he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. ‘And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years to come; take your ease, eat, drink and be merry.’ But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?’ So is the man who stores up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

And He said to His disciples, ‘For this reason I say to you, do not worry about your life, as to what you will eat; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap; they have no storeroom nor barn, and yet God feeds them; how much more valuable you are than the birds! And which of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life’s span? If then you cannot do even a very little thing, why do you worry about other matters? Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; but I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass in the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you? You men of little faith! And do not seek what you will eat and what you will drink, and do not keep worrying. For all these things the nations of the world eagerly seek; but your Father knows that you need these things. But seek His kingdom, and these things will be added to you.'”

Jesus was very clear…..we cannot get caught up in possessions or titles….an abundant life is not found there.

He says that God knows what we need….we have to seek His kingdom and His will and trust that He will take care of us.

It doesn’t mean we don’t have to work, or be wise with saving and planning ahead, or be good stewards of what we earn or are given. But, we cannot get “caught up in the things the “nations of the world eagerly seek”.

Just take a step back and look at your life….I am currently doing just that. I don’t like what I see…too many “purses among other things”….

Not sure what your NOT enough is????

But God wants our not enough to be HIM…just can’t get enough of HIM….His righteousness and His Kingdom….WE have a promise from Him when we do this….HE will take care of us…It is a trust issue and a greed issue….I have issues…Just saying!
